If you're a sports car enthusiast, you probably live for rear-wheel drive (RWD) vehicles. Then again, if you're just looking to get to work comfortable and conveniently, you probably prefer front-wheel drive (FWD) vehicles.

What's the big difference between them?

Most BMW models are have a rear-wheel drivetrain. It makes sense for them.

BMW is a sporty luxury brand, and RWD fits that image to a T. Having powered wheels in back, and an engine up front means a RWD vehicle has a better front-to-rear weight balance for more precision handling. Then, there's the physics of acceleration. When you hit the gas, just as you feel pushed back against your seat, so too does your car tip its weight onto the rear wheels. In a RWD vehicle, this means added traction through acceleration.

If RWD vehicles drive so much better, why have FWD vehicles at all?

For one thing, they're cheaper to build, making FWD cars more affordable. When price isn't an issue, you may still prefer a FWD car for those icy Westborough winters. On a slippery surface, a FWD vehicle has better traction because most of the car's weight is over the powered front wheels. Physics is also on your side when it snows out-- it's much easier for front wheels to pull you through the snow than for rear wheels to push you.

Whichever set of wheels you prefer to power, we've got options for you here at Autobahn USA. We hope you'll come test drive a vehicle or two from our used inventory.
